Submission Guidelines

General Guidelines
Clare welcomes your original, unpublished poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction. Our reading period for the 2017 issue of the journal will run from February 1 to May 1. Submissions that we receive outside of this period will not be read. Please send only one submission (up to 5 poems, 5000 words prose) per genre per reading period and upload all pieces within a genre in a single document, not individually. We no longer read submissions received via snail mail.

We accept simultaneous submissions but request that writers notify us immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Except in special circumstances, we are unable to provide feedback on rejections beyond simple notification. Because we are a small, nonprofit operation, we are unable to pay our contributors.

The aesthetics of the journal change somewhat from year to year as our editorial board shifts, but we are always looking for writing that is innovative and well-crafted. We publish work based purely on its own merits and are happy to accept writing from writers early in their careers as well as those with long publication histories.  Please consider reading a previous issue of our journal for an idea of what we’re looking for.

Limit 5 poems (up to 10 pages total). Please submit all poems in a single document.

Limit 5000 words total. Please only submit one long piece or up to 5 short-short stories per submission. In the case of short-shorts, please include all stories in a single document.

Creative Nonfiction
Limit 5000 words.
